Administrative Intern- Environmental Programs (PT), Job No. 15-059

The City of Manhattan Beach is now accepting applications for a part-time Administrative Intern. The Administrative Intern will provide support to the Environment Programs Manager in the Public Works Department. This position will assist in conducting research, performing special projects and complete various duties as assigned. The position will expose students to career options within a municipal government environment. This position may require work on weekend and evening hours to assist with special City events.

JOB FUNCTIONS: The listed tasks essential for this position may include, but are not limited to, assisting with an update to the City's Sustainability report; maintenance of Going Green website; creation of media notices to advertise upcoming programs, outreach and monitoring of businesses responding to existing ordinances; assistance with environmental programs and events; organization of construction and demolition (C&D) recycling tickets; use of personal computer, Microsoft Office Suite programs and social media applications; interacting with the public in person or via telephone; an assisting in administrative and clerical support activities as needed.

Education: Must be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited college or university with major coursework in public policy or a related field.

Training and Experience: No experience is necessary. NOTE: Current vacancy is located in the Public Works Department. Those individuals with coursework in environmental policy and programs are strongly encouraged to apply.

License: A valid California Class "C" driver's license and acceptable driving record are required at the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have general knowledge of research methods and techniques; the ability to work effectively and communicate with other people both orally and in writing; have organizational skills; follow directions and complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner; and ability to learn and use personal computer hardware and software. A strong desire to work in a public service oriented environment is beneficial.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the intern frequently sits, uses a telephone and personal computer for extended periods of time. May occasionally stand and use arms, legs, and back to lift or move objects. Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
