The City of Manhattan Beach Information Technology Department has an exciting opportunity for a Network Administrator. Information Technology provides support for the City’s network environment, operating systems, office automation programs, telecommunications, website, audio visual, Geographic Information Systems and government cable television broadcast services.  

The Information Technology Department is committed to improving fiscal responsibility through collaboration with other departments and organizations to provide effective technical solutions which continuously facilitate and improve the City of Manhattan Beach mission of public service.

JOB FUNCTIONS:

Plans, organizes, and maintains computer systems within the City, including data networks involving fiber and Ethernet cabling as well as networking equipment core and edge switches, routers, wireless access points (WAP) and controllers, public safety systems, various specific departmental and enterprise solutions, telecommunications including fiber and copper cabling, phone and voicemail equipment.  Supports, manages, and ensures operating capacity of the Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN) to ensure proper functioning 24 hours a day, seven days a week. May be required to work shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.  Administers database management and email systems, storage area network and network servers, schedules network upgrades and monitors networking systems to ensure optimum performance. Performs full back-up, data archive and date recovery for programs and users based upon regular schedule. Operates and participates on Information Technology support team for City broadcast functions. Provides technical assistance to City staff for printers, computers, Internet services, mobile phones, landline phones, software, hardware, digital surveillance, and public safety vehicle technology. Manages multiple servers, such as operating system, security and service updates, and monitors network security systems such as firewall, intrusion detection system, event log, spam filtering, internet filtering, network anti-virus system, and ensures that the security and integrity of the City’s network infrastructure is maintained at all times. Coordinates and supervises work of information technology solution providers and contractors.  Monitors daily Information Technology operations and leads team members in completing specific help desk tasks, projects and assignments.  Evaluates and conducts tests to determine the City’s technical needs, makes recommendations. May write and review RFPs (Requests For Proposal) as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Information Systems or Computer Science supplemented by courses in microcomputer diagnostics and repair and local area network administration using Microsoft networking technology.

Experience:  Three (3) years of experience in microcomputer support and administration of local area networks using Microsoft Windows.

Substitution:  Additional experience in this area may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis to a maximum substitution of four years’ experience for the bachelor’s degree.
