Reserve Police Officer (Level II) Job No. 14-014

The City of Manhattan Beach is seeking Reserve Police Officers. This is a non-paid volunteer position. The Reserve Police Officer (Level II) assists with general law enforcement and crime prevention duties to supplement the full time, regular Peace Officers. Some of duties may include the patrolling of an assigned area in a radio car, on bicycle, or on foot; answer calls for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and regulations; assist with preliminary or follow-up investigations of burglaries, thefts, robberies, deaths, assaults, accidents and other disturbances; assist with calls related to traffic incidents and any other required emergencies; observe, monitor and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorists and enforce traffic laws; assist with detailed investigations of criminal incidents, and participate in all normal enforcement activities including enforcing laws, issuing citations, making arrests; and searching, processing, finger printing and transporting prisoners.
Age: 21 years age at the time of application.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien with an application for citizenship completed one year prior to application.
Training & Experience: U.S. high school diploma, GED or California Proficiency Test. Completion of college level course work is desirable. Must volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per calendar month in order to maintain California Post qualifying service. Shall refrain from smoking tobacco or using other tobacco substance at any time on or off duty.
Licenses & Certificates: *Proof of the following: (a) Completed a POST- certified Police Academy within the past three years; or (b) be presently an active Level II Reserve Officer with a California agency.
Physical Requirements: All tasks must be performed while wearing the leather gear waist belt with all required equipment. Must have ability to run at least 50 yards at maximum effort; resist combative subjects through kicking, pushing, wrestling, pulling or shoving; maintain balance, at times in conjunction with climbing; jump, hurdle, vault or climb over obstacles such as walls, fences and embankments, frequently requiring speed; move non-resident persons or objects, including motions such as dragging, pulling, lifting, carrying and supporting. Must be able to carry a flashlight, radio, and a weapon while running. Requires lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, with ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds without assistance. Must be able to drive an emergency vehicle at high speed while operating and making a broadcast over a two-way radio. Vision 20/100 correctable to 20/20 with glasses or contact lens (hard or soft). Must hear and understand whispered verbal communication.
