Afterschool REC
Welcome to the City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Afterschool REC Webpage!

Kids at the playgroundAfterschool REC is an enrichment program designed for children 6 to 12 years old. Children under six are welcome to attend the program but must be accompanied by an adult or guardian with the approval and guidance of the recreation leader. Children are encouraged to participate in all scheduled activities; however, if they choose not to, alternative activities are available. All programs are supervised by trained recreation leaders.

Dedicated space for Afterschool REC is available at each of the three program sites: Live Oak Park, Manhattan Heights Park and Sand Dune Park. These facilities include arts and crafts work areas and supplies, board games, Foosball and carom tables and other equipment for a variety of outdoor sports.

What Afterschool REC Can Do For You
Afterschool REC is committed to providing recreation experiences to all participants and strengthening their safety and security.  Many safety classes are offered such as: Stranger Danger, bicycle workshops and skateboard safety.  Afterschool REC promotes recycling and how we can protect our environmental resources.  Afterschool REC has also teamed up with the Manhattan Beach Farmers Market to promote health and wellness by providing healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables.  In the program, we also increase cultural unity through activities and arts and crafts.  Afterschool REC is committed to teaching the motto "Safe, Clean and Green." Safe, Clean and Green
Afterschool REC operates a safe, clean and green program. This means we value physical and emotional safety. We ask that children help keep Afterschool REC a safe place, that they are courteous and respectful of others and themselves. With these attributes, they are able to have fun in a safe environment.

We also value personal responsibility. The children are asked to help keep Afterschool REC a clean place. If they make a mess, they clean it up. They also put away the stuff they play with such as balls, games and craft supplies. In this way, they can have fun in a clean environment.

Finally, we value our physical and emotional environment. We ask that the children help keep Afterschool REC green and healthy; be nice to others; be healthy and be supportive of others; pick up their trash as well as trash they see on the ground; put litter in its place and recycle. In this way, they can have fun taking care of their environment.

Afterschool REC Joins Let's Move Campaign

We have joined First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign towards fighting childhood obesity. Studies have shown that every child should engage in 60 minutes of vigorous play every day to develop to a healthy weight. We strive to increase physical activity by providing playgrounds and community centers where they can play and be active after school. Our programs maintain a vibrant and challenging atmosphere to keep participants engaged.

Parents are Welcome
Afterschool REC welcomes and encourages visits from parents at any time. Parents may participate in activities with the recreation leader’s approval and guidance. We also encourage parental participation in planning programs and providing suggestions on how we can better serve the community.

Donations
In order to obtain additional equipment and continually develop new activities, Afterschool REC does accept donations to help defray some of these costs. Please contact David Ibarra, Afterschool REC Supervisor, at (310) 802-5419 to make these arrangements.
