The City of Manhattan Beach Joins a Global Movement

350 parts per million is the upper limit of carbon dioxide that leading science tells us we should have in the atmosphere. Currently our planet is at nearly 390 ppm, more CO2 than seen at any other time in recorded history. For the past year the 350 organization has worked to gather public and political support for a global climate treaty committing to reach 350 ppm.

Over 5,200 events in more than 181 countries were organized to support the 350 organization and take action against climate change. Manhattan Beach is proud to have served as the host city for the largest climate action event in the nation. The event took place from 3:00 to 4:00 PM, and drew over 1,300 participants who collectively threw up their arms, and did the wave for ten minutes.

City Council at 350 eventOur local elected officials, over 40 nonprofit groups and businesses, residents, and individuals from neighboring cities lined up to "do the wave" and form a human tide line to highlight the impacts climate change will have on sea level rise and our unique coastal community. The images were captured by  several photographers and documentary film makers. To see more images and video of this event, please visit the South Bay 350 event website.

The goal of this event is to create a stunning visual image along our iconic coastline and share these images, along with thousands of others, with global leaders at the UN climate conference in Copenhagen this December.
