Water Conservation Education

The City of Manhattan Beach acquires its drinking water from the West Basin Municipal Water District and the Water Replenishment District of Southern California. Both agencies provide water conservation tour, workshop and school outreach programs. These programs are tailored to providing information and training that assists the general public and educators in understanding the severity of the current drought and the need for sustained personal action that can be taken to conserve water. In this critically dry year, learn how you can make a difference and reduce your water use.  Please click on the links below for information on these important offerings:

West Basin  Municipal Water District (WB MWD)

  • Tours – WB MWD  conducts free tours of its Edward C. Little water recycling facility upon request.

  • Workshops – WB MWD presents a class titled Water 101. This class covers the basics of water and then explores water issues from global, national, state and local levels, and concludes with solutions to future water challenges.

  • School Programs – WB MWD offers a wide and varied range of water education programs and activities that cater to elementary through high school students, in addition to providing education materials to educators.

Water Replenishment (WRD) 

  • Tours – WRD conducts free groundwater tours of the Central and West Coast Basins throughout the year. The purpose of the tour is to acquaint you with the challenges we face in supplying water to southern Los Angeles County.

  • Workshops – WRD offers a series of classes for water smart gardening. Topics include drought-tolerant plants, irrigation basics, horticultural practices  and garden design concepts.

  • School Programs – WRD Educational Partnership Program provides water education programs through the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro. The WRD web site also provides free educational materials for teachers and parents to use in the classroom and at home.
