ABOUT THE POSITION:     The Electrician will install, repair, and maintain electrical services and equipment throughout the City.  This position will report to the Facilities Supervisor and will be a part of the Facilities Maintenance work group within the Public Works Department.

The Public Works Department has five divisions comprised of Administration, Maintenance, Environmental, Utilities, and Engineering.  They provide a comprehensive level of municipal utility and maintenance services that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.  The department strives to provide these programs in a professional and cost-efficient manner and is committed to being responsive to changing community needs and priorities.  Excellent customer service is a trademark of the department and city. 

DEFINITION:     Under general supervision installs, repairs and maintains electrical services and equipment throughout the city; performs related work as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:     Lays out and installs new wiring; tests for defects, removes, replaces and repairs worn or defective wiring, outlets, fixtures, telemetry and instrumentation equipment; performs field maintenance on switches, panels, pumps, motors, generators, light and power circuits including street lighting systems and other types of electrical lighting and power equipment with the ability to safely operate and work at heights from aerial boom truck; installs and assembles lighting fixtures; wires electrical control equipment; repairs and services electrical equipment including bearings; maintains and repairs auxiliary power units; assists in reviewing plans, designing and construction of new electrical systems; orders, stocks and maintains electrical equipment tools and supplies for city facilities and equipment; assist with non-electrical duties as required.  May be required to work shifts, weekends, and/or holidays.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience:     Completion of an accredited apprenticeship-training program in the electrical trade and two years of journeyman level electrician experience.  California State Electrical Certification and instrumentation experience highly desirable.

License:     Possession of valid California Class "C" Driver's License at the time of employment.  Possession of a Class "B" Driver's License within one year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:      Knowledge of electrical terms, materials, methods, machinery and equipment; knowledge of electrical codes, orders, ordinances and laws; knowledge of the fundamentals of electricity; knowledge of the City's electrical policies, regulations and practices; knowledge of and skill in performing basic electrician's work such as leading in wires, making proper connections, locating trouble and repairing defective wiring; knowledge and ability to safely operate and work at heights from aerial boom truck; ability to work from plans and detailed drawings; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work cooperatively with others; ability to demonstrate and follow electrical safety procedures. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:     While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach; climb; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; smell; and occasionally use arms, legs, and back to lift or move 100 pounds

This position requires specific vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus on small objects.

The employee regularly works outdoors and may be exposed to variable weather conditions; occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, works in sewer lift stations, water plants, and chlorine rooms, and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration.
