The Manhattan Beach Art Center (MBAC) presents TWO by Two- Stories Beneath the Surface; Amelia Amell and Jesús Chaidez.Drug Tunnel, 2018 by Jesus Chaidez

Amelia Amell and Jesús Chaidez have both been informed by their rich cultural backgrounds, one from the island of Hispaniola and the other from Culiacan, Mexico. As a whole, this exhibit examines the work of artists living on two worlds and the impact of global politics, personal histories and cultural symbolism and how it relates to living in the United States.

Curated by Singletreearts this exhibition highlights the practice of two important contemporary artists and how they approach narrative and surface treatments.

Jesús Chaidez was born in Culiacan, Mexico and immigrated to the United States when he was five years old. His work explores the importance of under painting (the layering of paint). The work is inspired by the burial mound traditions and through meditative mark – making. In the work Chaidez builds multiple layers of color to form mounds of dramatic grass. They tell the story of “Illegal immigration” and the drug trade which shares the same infrastructure and destinations. Also, he is a tea expert with 15 years of dedication to the way of tea. He started his tea journey while living in San Francisco and studied for six years under Tea Master Roy Fong, and his wife Grace, at Imperial Tea Court, it was there that he refined his gon fu cha and developed an appreciation for how complex tea is. He will be hosting tea events throughout the show. Jesús Chaidez attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and received his B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Luna, 2017 by Amelia Amell Amelia Amell was born on the Island of Hispaniola and is currently a resident of Manhattan Beach. She has always been haunted by a sense of separation, a feeling of not belonging to a family, a society, or even a body. Eventually understanding that this feeling is common to the human experience, she is searching for security in a constantly changing world, forever longing for belonging. Her art emerges from this universal desire to make things whole again, especially to bridge the mundane and the divine. Amelia Amell is both an arts advocate and an artist. She has a master’s degree in both Spiritual Psychology and Multimedia Communication.
