100th Anniversary of the Neptunian Woman's Club

On May 17, 2009, please join with the Neptunian Woman's Club members to celebrate their 100th year of service; from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at their clubhouse located at 920 Highland Avenue.

Founded May 26, 1909, by ten ladies in the sleepy hamlet of Manhattan Beach, the Neptunian Woman's Club has been a forerunner and leader in this community for 100 years.  The club is the oldest and longest running philanthropic organization in this City.

Choosing the motto, "Labor Omia Vincit," freely translated, means, "work conquers all," the women dedicated themselves to the advancement of general culture, civic betterment, educational scholarships and social welfare.  Each year many philanthropic projects receive thousands of dollars, distributed between various groups and organizations.

In 1910, the club established the first library, as well as sponsoring the first "Friends of the Library" group in Los Angeles County; in 1912/1913 hundreds of hours were spent planting sea moss to retain the drifting sand; encouraged and worked for the incorporation of the town, even though women could not vote until 1912; and members developed the first boy scout group.

Over the years a wealth of ideas, creativity, and dedication has been given by the women of the club, working together hand-in-hand sharing their talents, time and energy.  Each member is an integral part of a growing organization, for the members take pride in their friendships and their accomplishments.
