Maintenance Worker I/II, Job No. 17-023

The City of Manhattan Beach is now accepting applications for the Streets and Water Divisions in the Public Works Department. Under general supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of manual labor and maintenance duties that include but are not limited to the operation of various power-driven machines, equipment and vehicles in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of City water facilities, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, roadways and perform other related duties are required.

This classification has two levels. Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level position. Positions in this class are distinguished by the performance of unskilled and semi-skilled duties under the direction of a lead person or supervisor. Persons in this position are expected to progress to Level II within the prescribed time frame with appropriate training, experience, certification and satisfactory job performance.

Maintenance Worker II is the journey level position. Positions in this class are distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I position in that they perform the full range of duties in water/streets facilities maintenance, construction and repair work in assigned areas, and are expected to work on projects independently, while receiving occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise. Persons in this class are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit and may also be assigned to act as a leader of a small work crew for projects of limited scope and duration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Training & Experience: 
          
Maintenance Worker I: One (1) year of experience performing construction, repair, water, or maintenance functions.

Maintenance Worker II: Two (2) years of experience performing construction, repair, water, or maintenance functions.

License:
        
A valid California Class "C" license at the time of employment. Persons hired at the Maintenance Worker I level must obtain a Class "A" driver's license with tanker endorsement within one (1) year of appointment.

Certificate:

  • Positions assigned to Water must also obtain a valid State of California State Water Resources Control Board Certificate, Grade 2 (D2) within eighteen (18) months of employment
  • Must posses the State of California State Water Resources Control Board Certificate, Grade 3 (D3) within three (3) years of employment.

NOTE: The Water Distribution 3 certification must be obtained to carry out "stand by" responsibilities.
