Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician (Part-Time), Job No. 18-056

The City of Manhattan Beach is seeking an independent and detail oriented GIS Technician to provide technical geographic information systems input, including editing and system analysis to produce a wide variety of maps, reports, and other projects. 


Under general direction, the GIS Technician creates and updates maps and reports; creates map features; digitizes input and imports data; researches and evaluates information relevant to the GIS. The incumbent performs spatial analyses; operates and maintains the geographic information systems data base, software and hardware; and performs other related work as required. The GIS Technician must have a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of geographic information systems; database design; management and cartographic techniques; maintenance of GIS equipment; current ESRI Desktop GIS software.

HOURS: Part-time positions will not work over 960 hours per fiscal year.


Education: Bachelor’s degree in geography, geographic information systems, computer science or a related field from an accredited four year college or university.

Training and Experience: Six (6) months of demonstrated experience in geographic information systems. Experience in a municipal setting is preferred.

License: A valid CA driver’s license at the time of employment.
