Pier and Roundhouse Aquarium Project Groundbreaking Ceremony

DATE: Monday, December 4, 2017
TIME: 1:30 PM
LOCATION: MB Pier / Roundhouse

Manhattan Beach, CA (December 1, 2017) - The public is invited to attend the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Manhattan Beach Pier and Roundhouse Aquarium Improvements Project on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 1:30 PM at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier.

The Manhattan Beach Pier and Roundhouse Aquarium represent iconic landmarks for the City and State of California. The City, in partnership with the Harrison Greenberg Foundation and Oceanographic Teaching Stations, Inc. have embarked on a unique opportunity to carry out an extraordinary restoration project for the public. Beyond completing critical maintenance to the Pier and Roundhouse building, the project will modernize the aquarium and its educational facilities. The Roundhouse building was constructed in 1992 and will maintain its original exterior design elements, while the redesigned and reimagined interior aquarium facility will enhance its role as a free public educational facility for generations to come.

The draft and final proposed improvements were presented to the public and City Council on May 16, 2017 and August 1, 2017, respectively, during regularly scheduled council meetings and they were unanimously approved for implementation.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2018. This month, a temporary aquarium will be established at the base of the Manhattan Beach Pier, adjacent to the south parking lot, which will be open to the public during construction.
