Manhattan VillageIn 1987, Pacific Coast Homes began operation of three Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) systems at Town Court East, Town Court West, and Estate Homes residential tracts in order to mitigate methane gas from the subsurface. Each system consists of the following components: a positive displacement blower; two, 200-pound, activated carbon adsorbers; an exhaust fan; and an array of SVE wells. The extracted vapors, composed of methane gas and non-methane volatile organic compounds (nonmethane VOCs), are treated using the carbon adsorbers. The treated methane gas is mixed with air prior to being emitted to the atmosphere. Each SVE system is being operated and monitored in accordance with a system-specific Permit to Operate granted by South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). These permits are renewed on an annual basis.
