Please review the enclosed information. It is imperative that both the race participant and parent review this information in order for each individual to safely and successfully participate in the 10th Annual Kids EXTREME at Begg Pool on Sunday, August 19, 2018.
Included below are the race details to help you and your future Kids EXTREME child from the start to the finish line!
Registration and packet pick-up, race start, transition and finish will all take place at Begg Pool and Begg Field on the East side of Polliwog Park (off of Peck Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard).
Parking will be available in the lower parking lot of Meadows Transitional School off of Peck Avenue.
REGISTRATION AND PACKET PICK-UP:
Kids EXTREME registration and packet pick-up hours will be on Sunday, August 19, 2018 from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. The first 150 participants will receive their race t-shirt on race day; the remaining shirts will be mailed approximately two weeks after the race.
REGISTRATION AND PACKET PICK-UP FORMAT:
When you arrive at Begg Field, there will be a large blue tent where registration and packet pick-up will be located. A parent or a legal guardian must be present during athlete check-in where you will receive the following:
- Registration Form - If you are already registered, you may bypass this table. New registrations will need to complete a registration form.
- Race bib number - Please, safety pin the race bib to the front of the participant's t-shirt.
- Pick-up ankle timing chip.
- T-shirt pick-up - You will receive one complimentary T-shirt. You can purchase additional T-shirts for $10.00 each. Youth and Adults sizes will be available.
Distances for the Kids EXTREME: Participants ages 5 to 8 and the family division will swim 25 yards; participants ages 9 to 10 will swim 50 yards; and participants ages 11 to 15 will swim 100 yards.
The swim will be at Begg Pool, then run 1 kilometer around Polliwog Park and finish with a 200 yard obstacle course. Be ready to swim, run and go over, under, through and between various obstacles. Don't forget take your shoes off before the mud pits. Remember to bring a change of clothes.
- Group 1: Family - child (child must be between the ages of 4 to 6 years of age)
- Group 2: Ages 5 to 6
- Group 3: Ages 7 to 8
- Group 4: Ages 9 to 10
- Group 5: Ages 11 to 12
- Group 6: Ages 13 to 15
The swim start will be a wave start in two-minute intervals. Group one will swim first, then group two, three, four, five, and then group six. The swim will take place at Begg Pool. The distance is 25 yards for group 1, 2, and 3, 50 yards for group 4, 100 yards for group 5 and 6. Participants will only need their swimsuit, swim cap for long hair, goggles, and their ankle timing chip. NO SWIM FINS, SNORKELS, MASK, SWIM PADDLES, ETC. WILL BE ALLOWED.
There will be two swimmers per lane. Swimmers can stop to rest. Swimmers who need assistance may have help as long as they do not gain any advantage. Family division, parents will be allowed to assist their child if needed. After the swim, each participant will then move to the run transition area.
TRANSITION AND SHOES CHECK-IN:
Transition and shoes check-in is only on race day. The transition area will open to all age groups at 7:30 AM. Parents are allowed in the transition area to help their child with his/her running shoes, T-shirts and bib numbers. Please DO NOT remove your child's ankle timing chip.
Each participant will have his/her bib number on the right upper arm with permanent marker.
There will be a course and rules review approximately at 8:55 AM, 5 minutes before group one starts their race.
T-shirts must have the race number pinned to the front and must be worn throughout the entire run and obstacle course events. The Run Course will be marked. The course will begin at Begg Pool continuing towards Begg Field followed by a U-turn into the park walk path. The run will continue towards Manhattan Beach Boulevard heading east to Redondo Avenue. Runners will turn left by the Manhattan Beach Historical House and run towards Polliwog Pond. They will run around the ponds and continue up the hill towards Begg Field where they will enter Begg Field and begin the obstacle course.
There will be one aid station in the Begg Field area; no aid stations on the run course. Aid stations will have water and fruit available for participants to eat after the race.
Each child will be given a timing chip that is secured to their right ankle. It's very important your child keeps their ankle timing chip for the entire race.
MEDALS AND AWARDS:
All finishers will receive commemorative medals.
At the finish line, each child will receive a medal. This is a great time to congratulate your child for their hard work and great efforts! After your child has rested, please feel free to relax and enjoy the park while the event organizers compile the race results and prepare for the awards ceremony. Begg Pool and the obstacle course will be available after the last group finishes the race.
The Kids EXTREME race course has been designed to make the race safe, fun and easy for parents to photograph. Even though our start, transition and finish line are close together, it may be hard to get every shot you want. JW Party Pictures will be our designated race photography company that will be on the course and at the finish line. All photos from JW Party Pictures will be posted online and available for purchase until January 2019.
- Upper torso must be covered during the run and obstacle course portion (shirt or full swim suit)
- Race number (bibs) must be worn at all times during the run and obstacle course event
- Pass on the left, slower runners stay on right
- Ankle timing chip must be worn on the right ankle for the entire race to get an accurate time
