Healthy AT HOMEHealthy at Home for Older Adults
April 15, 2020 As Manhattan Beach residents observe the public health orders to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic, the Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the new “Healthy at Home” virtual recreation program in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and business community. The new program is being launched to provide the community with additional options for staying active and healthy at home and includes instructional fitness and overall wellness videos, printables, and healthy tips.

During these uncertain times, it is natural to feel a sense of anxiety, loneliness, and uneasiness as your day to day routines have changed. It becomes more important than ever to maintain social relationships, exercise regularly, eat healthy, and develop routines. In collaboration with class instructors, staff, youth sport organizations, and local businesses, the “Healthy at Home” initiative serves to provide residents of all ages with virtual arts, craft and cooking projects, fitness and instructional classes, and various tips and tools to stay grounded, active and positive from the comfort of their homes. There is even a tab for classes and activities for older adults!

March 23, 2020 Utilizing various community partnerships, the City of Manhattan Beach has coordinated a resource delivery program that serves older adults that need assistance during the coronavirus pandemic. Older adults can now call the City’s Older Adult hotline at (310) 802-5010 and coordinate meals, transportation, medication, groceries, or other essential items from community and City employee volunteers. City Facility and Event Programming Changes
Manhattan Beach, CA (March 13, 2020) – In response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Manhattan Beach has closed the Joslyn Community Center and cancelled all Older Adult Programming until the end of April 2020. This action is taken out of an abundance of caution, and to protect the health and safety of the public, and older adults in particular that are vulnerable to COVID-19. In addition, following Governor Gavin Newsom’s recommendations to slow the spread of COVID-19, the City has postponed or cancelled special events with large public gatherings until the end of April 2020. Let’s Talk…Woman to Woman is a new discussion group for women ages 55 and older. This is a drop in activity and no registration or RSVPs are required. Your wisdom, insights and, of course, your humor will be expected. Senior Advisory Committee member Diane Campisi will facilitate. Discussion topics regarding women’s issues will be torn from the front pages of the newspaper, magazines, and other forms of media. Participants are welcome to bring their own discussion topics or everyday concerns as well. Participation by everyone will be encouraged.

Basic Techniques in Drawing

Learn basic drawing techniques using drawing and colored pencils, pen and ink and blending tools. Bring a 9x12 drawing pad, #2 pencil and pink or white eraser to first class. All levels welcome, especially beginners.

Take your beginning drawing skills to the next level. Shading, blending, highlights, shadow, still life, landscape, atmospheric perspective, one point perspective, composition and more will be covered. If you have the following supplies please bring them to the first class; 9x12 drawing pad (50 lbs. or more), #2 pencil, pink or white eraser, kneading eraser and drawing pencils. Supplies will be discussed at first class meeting.

Alzheimer's Association presents: a monthly caregiver support group for Alzheimer's and Dementia. Being a care partner for someone with Dementia is a life altering challenge. The mission: cover babies with warmth, love, and blessings. Founded in love and hope for every newborn! Blankets of Love South Bay is working with Martin Luther King Junior Community Hospital to donate a handmade blanket to wrap each newborn as the baby leaves the hospital.
