Refuse Program
Waste Management, Inc. has been the City's franchise waste hauler for all residential and commercial refuse for over twenty years.  With the most recent awarded franchise agreement effective June 1, 2011, all Manhattan Beach single and multi-family cart customers receive semi-automated carts and service.  Sand Section residents may no longer use personal containers for refuse collection.

Click here to view the current awarded franchise agreement with Waste Management (June 2011 - June 2018 with a 24-month optional extension).

Single family residents pay for refuse service based on the size and quantity of their gray trash carts; recycling and organic waste carts continue to be no additional charge.  Multi-family cart customers pay based on the number of dwelling units at the property.  Multi-family bin customers pay based on the size and frequency of trash pick-ups at the property.

All single and multi-family residents utilize semi-automated carts in either 35 gallon, 65 gallon or 95 gallon sizes.  All residential customers receive collection services once per week.  The city is divided into five sections for residential collection from Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM.  Carts may be set out for collection 10:00 AM the day before collection through 10:00 AM the day after collection.  Carts should be kept on the residents' property and out of public view when not placed for curbside collection.  Additional or replacement trash, recycling, and organic waste carts may be ordered by contacting Waste Management at (310) 830-7100.

Learn more about what you can put in your recycling containersItems are most recyclable if they are dry and clean; recyclable material can be placed loosely in the blue cart.  Some folks wonder if using water to give a jar a quick rinse before recycling offsets the good of recycling the material.  Keep in mind that manufacturing virgin material relies on many resources such as water and that the process to recycle a material back into market is far less cumbersome on resources.

For information regarding these and other related programs, please call Waste Management's Customer Service at (310) 830-7100.  When you call Waste Management, the representative will provide their name and the work order/confirmation number associated with your request.  Please record this information.  It will be helpful should you need the status of your request at a later date.

Where Does It All Go?
Waste Management disposes the trash (gray cart) from Manhattan Beach at the El Sobrante Landfill, which is owned and operated by Waste Management.  Recycling (blue cart) is taken to a Waste Management Recycle America "MRF" or "Material Recovery Facility" to be sorted by material type, then baled and sold as markets are feasible.  Organic waste - yard and food waste (green cart) is first sorted at Waste Management's Carson Transfer Station.  Yard waste is raked to sort out any debris and bagged food waste is separated from the yard waste and transported to Waste Management's CORe facility for processing.  The clean yard waste is sold to organics farms in California for Agricultural Cover.

Temporary Bin Rental
Cleaning out the garage?  Moving?  A temporary bin rental may be needed.  Temporary bin rentals must be acquired by the City's hauler, Waste Management, for all uses that do not require a City permit (such as major clean-outs and moving).   The temporary bin rental is for up to 10 days and includes one "service."  Additional service of the bin may be scheduled at an additional charge.  The bin must be kept inside private property lines at all times.  The pricing for the 10 day rental is determined by the fee schedule in the City's franchise agreement.  Contact Waste Management directly to reserve the rental at (310) 830-7100.  Waste Management will bill residents directly for this service and residents will pay the bill directly to Waste Management; it will not be included on the City Utility bill and no payment is due to the City for this service.
